What is a Dachshund?
Dachshunds were bred to follow prey into difficult spaces. Standard and Miniature are size varieties; Smooth, Longhaired and Wirehaired describe coats.
What are they like to live with?
Breed guidance describes clever, lively and courageous tendencies. Independence is part of the working history, not a guarantee about each dog.
Walks, play and training
Regular walks and activity help keep the dog fit. With a long back and short legs, jumping from furniture and repeated stairs deserve extra care.
Coat and grooming
Smooth, longhaired and wirehaired coats need different routines. Choose the actual coat before continuing in Grooming Planner.
Grooming Planner confirms the actual coat before building a routine.
Plan coat care ↗Size and fit
AKC references describe Standard dogs at about 7–14.5 kg and Miniatures at about 5 kg or less. Actual chest and back measurements are essential for this long body.
Actual measurements decide clothing, harness and collar fit.

What parents may underestimate
A small dog can have plenty of drive. Body shape does not tell the whole story.
